Maybe you love the idea of wallpaper, but the application and permanency of it is daunting. If that's the case, peel and stick wallpaper may be the perfect thing for you!
It is a product you can apply without professional help, and if you decide to change it after some time, it is easy to remove, doesn't damage your walls, and is a fun, exciting and impactful way to change up your space.
But before you take on the task, you will need to be prepared and know what is involved. Like any DIY project, there is a learning curve, but it's all part of the fun!
Materials Needed:
Peel and stick wallpaper
Measuring tape
Utility knife or scissors
Level or ruler
Smoothing tool (plastic smoother or credit card)
Step 1: Prepare the Surface
Clean the wall surface thoroughly with a damp cloth to remove dust, dirt, and grease.
Let the wall dry completely.
Ensure the surface is very smooth and free of holes. Patch any holes or imperfections for the best results.
Step 2: Measure and Cut
Measure the height of your wall from floor to ceiling.
Cut the first strip of wallpaper a few inches longer than this measurement to allow for adjustments.
Use a ruler and a utility knife to cut the wallpaper accurately.
Step 3: Peel and Stick
Start at the top of the wall. Peel a small section of the backing from the top of the wallpaper.
Align the wallpaper to the top edge of the wall, making sure it’s straight using a level or ruler.
Press the wallpaper onto the wall while peeling the backing down slowly as you go.
Step 4: Smooth Out Air Bubbles
Use a smoothing tool (plastic smoother or credit card) to press the wallpaper firmly against the wall, working from the center outward to remove any air bubbles or wrinkles.
Continue to peel and stick the wallpaper down the wall, smoothing as you go.
Step 5: Trim Excess Wallpaper
Once the wallpaper is applied, use a utility knife to carefully trim the excess at the top and bottom edges.
If applying multiple strips, match the pattern at the seams and repeat the process for the next strip, overlapping slightly if needed.
Have fun! And enjoy your walls for years to come.
