How to Choose the Right Wallpaper (8 Steps)

Updated: Mar 18

Selecting the perfect wallpaper for your home can be an exciting yet daunting task. With countless options available in terms of color, pattern, texture, and material, it's essential to consider various factors to ensure you choose the right wallpaper that not only enhances the aesthetics of your space but also reflects your personal style. Here's a comprehensive guide on how to choose the right wallpaper for your home.

1. Determine the Room's Purpose and Atmosphere: Before browsing through wallpaper options, it's crucial to understand the room's function and desired atmosphere. For instance, if you're decorating a bedroom, you might prefer soothing colors and subtle patterns to promote relaxation. In contrast, vibrant and bold designs could be suitable for spaces like the living room or study to create a lively ambiance.

2. Consider the Size of the Room and Pattern Scale: The size of the room and the scale of the pattern are significant factors to consider when choosing wallpaper. In smaller rooms, large, busy patterns may overwhelm the space, making it feel cramped. Instead, opt for smaller prints or solid colors to create an illusion of openness. Conversely, larger rooms can accommodate more intricate designs without appearing cluttered.

3. Evaluate the Lighting Conditions: Lighting plays a crucial role in how wallpaper appears in a room. Natural light can enhance the colors and texture of wallpaper, so consider the direction and intensity of sunlight in the room. Darker wallpapers can add warmth and coziness to rooms with limited natural light, while lighter options can make a space feel airy and bright. Additionally, artificial lighting should also be taken into account to ensure the wallpaper looks appealing both day and night.

4. Choose the Right Material: Wallpaper comes in various materials, each with its unique characteristics. Vinyl wallpaper is durable, easy to clean, and suitable for high-traffic areas like kitchens and bathrooms. Paper-based wallpapers offer a wide range of designs and textures but may require more delicate handling. Fabric and grasscloth wallpapers add texture and depth to a room but may be more challenging to maintain. Consider the practicality and maintenance requirements of each material before making a decision.

5. Reflect Your Personal Taste: Ultimately, your choice of wallpaper should reflect your personal style and preferences. Whether you prefer classic elegance, modern minimalism, or eclectic designs, there's a wallpaper to suit every taste. Take inspiration from your existing decor, color palette, and furnishings to ensure cohesion and harmony in your interior design scheme.

6. Test Samples and Swatches: Before committing to a particular wallpaper, it's advisable to order samples or swatches to see how they look in your space. Viewing the wallpaper in different lighting conditions and against existing furnishings can help you make an informed decision. Additionally, consider how the wallpaper will complement other elements in the room, such as curtains, furniture, and accessories.

7. Determine the Amount of Wallpaper Needed

So, you've settled on a wallpaper choice; now, how much should you purchase?

It's crucial to examine the specifics of your chosen wallpaper, including the dimensions of the roll—both length and width. Additionally, check for a pattern repeat, accounting for the wallpaper required to align the pattern seamlessly from sheet to sheet.

Using a tape measure, assess the width and height of each wall or surface. Then, calculate the number of drops you can obtain from a roll.

Step 1: Measure out the height of your wall and select the matching roll length from the list. If there is no matching height select the closest height above yours.

Step 2: Measure out the width of your wall and divide it by 72cm (our wallpaper roll width). The result is the number of sheets you will need. If the result is not a full number, you will need the quantity above.

This process is described in our wallpaper calculation formula.

Keep in mind, if you mix wallpaper from different dyelots (printed at different times) for the same wall, there is a risk of a slight colour variation.

Accurate measurements and double-checking your requirements before placing an order are ideal to avoid risking mixing wallpaper from different dyelots.

8. Lastly, when making online purchases, verify whether shipping costs are included

Also check the expected shipping duration. You can access this information in our FAQ's.

By considering these factors and taking the time to explore different options, you can choose the perfect wallpaper that enhances the beauty and character of your home while reflecting your individual style and personality. Whether you opt for bold and dramatic designs or subtle and understated patterns, the right wallpaper can truly transform your living space into a personalized haven of comfort and style.
